SENATOR KERRY NETTLE

Bush/Hu Visit Wrap up
Kerry and Bob's offices, and Greens offices all over the country, have
been inundated with messages from people in Australia and abroad about
their Bush protest. The overwhelming majority of responses have been positive,
although we have received responses from critics too. It's fantastic that
our actions provoked such community debate - like President Bush said,
we love free speech. We've included some of the best responses, as well
as other info on the visit, on Kerry's website.
Kerry's Palestine Speech
Kerry recently spoke in Parliament on the issue of Israeli and Palestinian
conflict. The speech was set in the context of supporting the decision
of the Sydney Peace Foundation to award this year's Sydney Peace Prize
to Dr Hanan Ashrawi, the noted Palestinian peace activist. For a full
copy of the speech go to www.kerrynettle.org.au
Medicare
The Senate Select Committee on Medicare reported to Parliament on 30
October, with non-government senators recommending the Senate reject the
government's Medicare legislation.
Health Minister Tony Abbott is discussing a compromise with the Australian
Democrats in a bid to get legislation through before Parliament rises
on 4 December. Kerry has called on senators not to negotiate because the
government's package has a fundamental flaw - it is based on Medicare
being a welfare safety net, not a universal national health insurance
scheme.
Parliamentary inquiries
Higher Education: The Senate committee report will be tabled in Parliament
on Friday. It is important that the four independent senators are lobbied
to reject the bills that will be debated in the final two weeks of Parliament
starting on Monday 24th November.
Building industry: Kerry is participating in the Senate inquiry into
bills implementing the Cole Royal Commission recommendations. Submissions
close on 30 November.
Legal Aid: Kerry is also participating in the inquiry into legal aid
funding and access to justice, in support of community legal centres.
Public hearings commence the week of 10 November.

MICHAEL ORGAN MP
www.michaelorgan.org.au
Well, the explosive detonation of Bob and Kerry's excellent work in the
Joint Meeting continues to reverberate. The office has had a number of
calls and emails from constituents both damning and praising Bob and Kerry's
actions. For his part, Michael chose to silently witness the disgraceful
kowtowing of John Howard to both Bush and Hu, to ensure that a Green presence
was maintained in the parliament, following Bob and Kerry's unconstitutional
barring.
The Illawarra was then fortunate to welcome Bob to Sandon Point to celebrate
the important Commission of Inquiry findings that vindicate the local
communities' stand against developer greed. This did not prevent Stockland,
the developer from attempting to destroy parts of the wetland the CoI
specifically mentioned as highly significant, on the justification that
their own earthworks were unstable. We will continue to call on the State
Planning Minister Craig Knowles to enforce the CoI findings.
Michael spoke at the Wollongong rally against workplace death, noting
that his proposed Workplace Death and Serious Injury Bill would make employers
directly responsible in instances of negligence leading to workplace death
or injury. With over 10,000 unionists marching in Sydney, this issue is
an important one for both the Greens and the labour movement generally.
Michael also had the privilege of meeting Aboriginal activist Gilbert
Holmes on Gilbert's trek from Brisbane to the Canberra Aboriginal Tent
Embassy. Gilbert's walk is a mission of healing, and he has been collecting
signatures of support in a commemorative book as his journey has unfolded.
Lastly, the Anniversary Dinner and Fundraiser for Michael, celebrating
one year in Federal Parliament was very successful. Some 280 people packed
into the Fraternity Club in Fairy Meadow for a night of food, speeches
and dancing. A good night appeared to be had by all, and Bob and Michael
were received with standing ovations. Well done to Theresa for the organisation
of this fabulous event.

LEE RHIANNON MLC
www.lee.greens.org.au
Confirmation came last week that all CountryLink rail services are under
threat - Minister Costa refused to answer when I asked him if plans are
afoot to shut down CountryLink next year. The mind boggles at the stupidity
of closing down all country train services, but that's what appears to
be on the agenda. Public transport is a public service, and shouldn't
always be required to break even. It's about access for pensioners and
the unemployed, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, keeping vehicles off
our roads and providing affordable, convenient transport for all. If Costa
goes ahead with his plans he will go in the history books as the worst
Transport Minister ever.
In a similar vein, I'm excited to be attending the 'People Train' protest
against the halving of the Parramatta Rail Link tonight. Two weeks ago
I spoke at a packed public meeting in Newcastle opposing the mooted closure
of the railway line into the city. Whether in Sydney, the regions or the
bush, the Greens are hot on Costa's heels.
Also on transport, on Sunday 26/10 we had a tremendous action at the
entrance to the M5 East tunnel. Along with local residents, we erected
signs saying "Tunnel ahead, Close all windows and vents." This
exact sign was recommended by NSW Health due to the elevated pollution
levels in the tunnel, but the RTA is refusing to act. So we took matters
into our own hands. It's disgraceful that the RTA is still refusing to
acknowledge the health implications of its road tunnels.
It's always nice to be able to report a victory, however slight. Following
the revelations of Swiss bank accounts, I called on the ALP to dump Graham
Richardson as MC of its big corporate fundraising dinner this Thursday.
Lo and behold, Richardson withdrew. The Greens will still be staging an
action outside, calling on Labor to stop soliciting massive donations
from developers.

IAN COHEN MLC
GE contamination spreads
The state's new gene technology advisory council must reject a proposed
5000-hectare trial of genetically engineered (GE) canola following revelations
that one of the applicants has breached its licence conditions at a much
smaller trial site near Wagga.
GE canola in Bayer CropScience's trial plot has contaminated adjoining
wheat paddocks, confirming non-GE farmers' greatest fears.
Bayer has clearly breached its exemption order and failed to contain
a trial GE crop less than a hectare in size. It is now seeking another
exemption order to conduct a hundred further trials, each 50 hectares
in size. This would be an outrageous risk and cannot be approved.
This breach by Bayer is embarrassing for the Agriculture Minister and
the Premier as both have supported the need for ongoing trials of GM crops
and played down the risks of cross-contamination.
Fire blame game on again
Throwing money at more hazard reduction will not save lives and property
from an increasing threat of severe bushfires, Greens MLC Ian Cohen said
today.
The final report of the House of Representatives Select Committee into
the Recent Australian Bushfires contained some constructive recommendations,
but largely ignored the environmental factors and simply focusing on who
to blame for recent intense fires.
Peace prize shame
Reactionary sections of Sydney's Jewish community and cheap political
opportunism have damaged the city's image as tolerant and undermined efforts
for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Propaganda, fear and insecurity are tactics that Jews claim to have suffered,
but the same tactics have been used to disrupt the Sydney Peace Prize
being awarded to Dr Ashrawi.
Dr Ashrawi is an advocate for peace with Israel, but not simply on historical
or ideological grounds. Rather, her message of peace is based on humanitarian
grounds - something we can all learn from.

PICKET THE ALP CORPORATE FUNDRAISER!!
5.30pm, Thursday, 13th November

Do you have a spare $11,000 to pay for an "Emperor's table"

Labor has invited their corporate guests to "join fellow princes
of commerce, generals of the war of trade, street hawkers and nobles of
the great city of Sydney to a lavish Roman banquet". The $11,000
price tag for an Emperor's table buys access to a senior Labor figure
and a special mention in the evening's program.
Lee Rhiannon's office is coordinating this event. Please join us and
other activist groups when we stage a mock sell-off of some of NSW's best
assets. (Maybe you can buy them before the corporations inside do?)
