The Greens Parliamentary E-Brief - No 441. HOT NEWSLabor hacks forestsLabor was left on its own in
the Senate on August 9 when it failed to back Greens Senator Bob Brown's
motion "That the Senate considers that wherever there is an existing plantation
alternative, old-growth forests and high conservation forests should not
be logged." The motion was passed with the support of the Democrats, Liberals
and One Nation. With 80% of the public backing the saving of old growth
forests, Labor forest hackers appear to have forgotten about the coming
election as well as the environment.
Labor hacks computer(s)?The disclosure that second in command in the NSW Upper
House, Tony Kelly, has been sprung with hacking software on his parliamentary
computer has left many unanswered questions. The police investigation
has not yet been concluded. To the many people who have asked us for an
update, we cannot definitely say that the parliamentary email system is
secure. The situation is highly unsatisfactory and the latest reports
that other Labor MPs are not cooperating with police adds to our concerns.
We are continuing to track this one.
Senate inquiry into independence of ABC BoardGreens Senator Bob Brown set up this inquiry which is
inquiring into : "The development and implementation of options for methods
of appointment to the board of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation
(ABC) that would enhance public confidence in the independence and representativeness
of the ABC as the National broadcaster."
