One of the guiding principles that The Greens is founded on is social and economic justice. As such, the Greens have always been strong advocates for the fundamental human right of freedom of sexuality and gender identity.
Greens parliamentarians have used their positions to further The Greens' policy goal of actively enhancing the status of people in the LGBTI community by pushing for legislative reforms that deliver greater equality to LGBTI people and keep the pressure on Governments to make progressive changes to the law. The Greens view this parliamentary work as vital to counter the push to the right from the major parties, whose homophobia is entrenched.
In 2008 the Greens have a comprehensive plan of LGBTI activities including a civil union private members bill, backing adoption campaigns and organising a Mardi Gras 78er event. more
In 2005, Lee decided to adopt the Tasmanian's Greens initiative of exploiting a loophole in the law that allows for stated based same sex marriage laws. more
In May 2004, then Greens MP Michael Organ introduced a Bill into Federal Parliament's lower house calling for people in same-sex relationships to have access to the same rights as heterosexuals. Senator Kerry Nettle's office also ran a federal same sex marriage campaign.
In March 2004 Lee Rhiannon launched the Cleaning Up the Act campaign at NSW Parliament house and the private member's bill, the Anti-Discrimination (Equality in Education and Employment) Amendment Bill. more

Excerpt from Australian Greens LGBTI policy:
People who define their social, cultural and political identities according to their sexuality and gender exist in every human society. However, some societies, including contemporary Australia, establish heterosexuality as the most valid form of sexuality and reinforce rigid male/female gender stereotypes. This devalues and marginalises lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and people with intersex conditions (LGBTI people) and assigns them to an inferior social, cultural and political status.
The Australian Greens believe that the acceptance and celebration of diversity, including sexuality and gender diversity, are essential for genuine social justice and equality.
